Emaline Reyes is a reproduction scholar who studies childbirth. Her past research focused on the medicalization of birth and patient preference for cesarean delivery. Currently Emaline's work is situated at the intersection between gender, medicine, and environment. She is pursuing two major projects:
1.) How pregnant people access maternal care in active disaster zones
2.) How climate refugees access reproductive services in unfamiliar spaces/post-displacement
Emaline is most interested in the regions of the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean, working with Latinx immigrants and diasporic communities. Half of her family comes from Puerto Rico, where she has begun conducting preliminary research on the effects of Hurricane Maria on pregnancy and childbirth. In addition to being an academic, Emaline is a trained childbirth doula and a trained Perinatal Community Health Worker (PCHW).
