Biography
Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Turkel joined the Department of Sociology at the University of Delaware in 1975 and retired in 2020. During his tenure, he chaired the Sociological Theory Area Committee, was a long-time member of the Law and Society Area Committee, and served for many years on the Graduate Policy Committee. Dr. Turkel taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Sociological Theory, Sociology of Law, Law and Society, and Politics and Society. He wrote articles and two books in the areas of social theory, law and society, and media. He served on numerous MA thesis and PhD dissertation committees. He was a founding member of the Legal Studies Program and had a joint appointment in Women and Gender Studies. Dr. Turkel served as President of the University of Delaware Chapter of the American Association of University Professors (UD-AAUP), and he served as Chief Negotiator for UD-AAUP for four of its contracts with the University of Delaware. Dr. Turkel served in a variety leadership positions in
national AAUP, including as Chair of the Government Relations Committee.
