Anne Bowler is a cultural sociologist whose research focuses on aesthetic-cultural theory and the sociology of art. She has also done historical work on gender. Her work has appeared in Theory & Society; Poetics; Cultural Sociology; and Journal of Social History. Her current research includes three projects: the rise of a national and international market for self-taught art, also known as Outsider art; theoretical and methodological issues in the sociology of art; and the complex relationship between the arts and processes of urban gentrification, with a special focus on the impact of gentrification on community arts organizations. Bowler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice, where she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in social theory and an advanced undergraduate seminar in the sociology of art. She has joint appointments in Women & Gender Studies, the Center for Material Culture Studies, the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and is a co-founder of the Digital Archive of Creative Vision Factory.
