DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY & CRIMINAL JUSTICE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL WELFARE/PUBLIC SOCIOLOGY

The University of Delaware’s academic leadership has identified the Department Sociology & Criminal Justice (https://www.soc.udel.edu/) (SOCJ) as a priority for academic growth and prominence. The Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in Social Welfare/Public Sociology at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin August 16, 2020. We seek scholars whose research advances our knowledge of policies that address economic and social inequality and/or provides a deeper understanding of the welfare of individuals and families. The preferred candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Sociology or a related social science and, in addition to contributing to the sociological understanding of social welfare, will engage in public sociology, interpreting social scientific knowledge for multiple audiences outside of academia.  Secondary area of specialization is open but we particularly welcome scholars engaging with the areas of Race/Ethnicity, Sociological Theory, and Law & Society. We seek a colleague whose teaching, research, and service will support and advance UD’s core values of diversity and inclusive excellence.

In addition to pursuing an ambitious research agenda and enhancing the department’s course offerings in Social Welfare/Public Sociology, the position has the potential to collaborate with other units, including the Biden School of Public Policy, Women and Gender Studies, Africana Studies, and the Legal Studies program, as well as two leading research centers: the Center for Drug and Health Studies (CDHS) and the Disaster Research Center (DRC).  The SOCJ department holds twenty-six core faculty with an extensive record of high-quality scholarship, funded research, strong professional and public service, and exemplary teaching. The department is located in the Social Sciences portfolio within the College of Arts and Sciences and offers highly competitive graduate programs in Sociology (MA, PhD) and Criminology (MA, PhD), including a highly USNWR ranked doctoral program in Criminology. We are committed to hiring a scholar who shows exceptional promise as a leader in the field and in our department.

Using the UD application system http://www.udel.edu/006256, applicants should upload a single document that includes a cover letter, C.V., three separate statements covering teaching, research, and a commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence, and a page listing the names and contact information for three references. Review of complete applications will begin on October 4th, 2019, and continue until the position is filled.  Please direct questions, but not application materials, to Social Welfare/Public Sociology Search Committee chair Dr. Asia Friedman: asiaf@udel.edu.
